THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR "DASH"

As human beings, we are often consumed with the business of "living": We wake up each morning with a series of tasks and "To Do" items, and we dash around completing them as quickly as possible before the day is done. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that our time on earth is also fragile and fleeting. The day we are born is a date to celebrate, but so can be the day when we finally die. These two dates, with a "dash" between them, represent the span of one lifetime. Whether we have lost friends/family to the virus recently, or to other calamities such as disease or accidents, we are faced with our own mortality and the knowledge that each day we live is truly a gift from God. That is why it is called the "present"!

There is an excerpt from the poem, The Dash by Linda Ellis, that says:

"For it matters not, how much we own,

the cars...the house...the cash.

What matters is how we live and love

and how we spend our dash."

God is most concerned about the quality of our "dash": Our lives are less about frantic tasks than they are about perfect exercises He gives us to help us earn our eternal salvation. There is only one true race with one real finish line. Thankfully, each new day offers us a chance to live fully and authentically as Christians, embracing His will in our lives.

Challenge: Take a moment out of your "busyness" this week to reflect on where the bulk of your time and energy is going these days. Look to the Word, consider what is truly important to God, and make that your focus this week. 

Afterall, we only get one shot at the race.
